A short winter walk needs its own plan. A familiar summer path can become slow, slippery or difficult to follow under snow. Start with a marked route that suits the day’s conditions and your experience.
Check the route before packing
Read the destination’s current trail information, weather forecast and daylight hours. Check whether the route is maintained in winter; Metsähallitus notes that most of its hiking trails do not have winter maintenance. Choose a shorter outing when conditions are uncertain.
Put these in your day bag
- Warm layers and a weather-resistant outer layer.
- Winter footwear, a hat, mittens and a spare warm layer for stops.
- A headlamp, even when you expect to return in daylight.
- A paper map, a compass and the skills to use them.
- A charged phone kept warm, plus a small first-aid kit.
- Snacks, a warm drink in a thermos, a sitting mat and a rubbish bag.
Keep the return simple
Allow extra time for snow and take a break before you feel exhausted. Turning back early is a normal planning decision. This checklist is for a short day walk, not a substitute for the equipment or skills needed for remote winter travel.
