Seeing the northern lights needs darkness, clear skies and auroral activity. A trip can improve your opportunities, but no forecast or booking can guarantee a sighting.

Choose a suitable time and place

Visit Finland describes the aurora season in northern Finland as running from late summer into spring, when nights are dark enough. Check the conditions for your actual destination rather than relying on a general seasonal promise.

Keep the outing practical

Choose a safe viewing place away from bright lights, dress for the weather and plan how to return. Stay off unfamiliar ice and avoid stopping a car where it creates a hazard.

Enjoy the trip either way

Build in other activities so cloudy nights do not determine the whole holiday. The accompanying aurora photograph was taken in Porvoo; it is not a photograph from Lapland or a forecast.
