A snowshoe outing can be a way to experience a snowy landscape after dark. Treat it as a winter activity first and a possible northern-lights opportunity second.
Choose an appropriate outing
For a first night walk, consider a guided service and ask about the route, effort, group size and conditions. Confirm exactly which equipment the operator supplies rather than assuming snowshoes, boots or lamps are included.
Prepare for cold and darkness
Bring suitable winter clothing and follow the guide’s instructions. Tell the organiser about any practical needs before booking. For independent travel, choose a route you can navigate and check current local advice.
Auroras are not guaranteed
Cloud cover and auroral activity affect visibility. Choose an outing you would enjoy even without the lights. The photograph shows a snowy landscape in Äkäslompolo, Finnish Lapland. It does not show a guided snowshoe outing or forecast current conditions.
