A Karelian pie, or karjalanpiirakka, is a savoury pastry associated with Karelia. A familiar version has a thin rye crust around a rice-porridge filling and is served with munavoi, a mixture of egg and butter.

Read the name and ingredients

Recipes and products differ. You may also see riisipiirakka on a label. Ask the bakery or read the package rather than assuming that every similar-looking pastry has identical ingredients.

Try a simple serving

For a first taste, buy a small portion and try the pastry before adding toppings. If you want egg butter, ask whether it is included or sold separately. Check the current price at the counter.

Dietary needs

The crust, filling and topping can contain different allergens. A rye crust is not gluten-free; check the particular product and ask staff if an ingredient matters to you.
