Finland

A library is a useful first stop when settling into everyday life in Finland. You can visit to read, study or ask staff for help finding material. Borrowing items requires a library card.

Bring identification

InfoFinland advises taking a photo ID when applying for a card. A first card is free. People without a Finnish personal identity code may be able to receive a card for a limited period; ask the local library about its process.

Ask for the material you need

Tell staff whether you want easy Finnish books, material in another language or help using the online catalogue. The Multilingual Library’s collection can be requested through local libraries around Finland.

Check the return date

Look at the due date for each loan and learn how to renew it online. Loan periods and charges depend on the library and material, so use the instructions supplied with your card. Tell the library when your address changes.
