Sauna culture in Finland was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It was Finland’s first element on the list, according to the Finnish Heritage Agency.

Recognition for a living tradition

The listing concerned sauna culture as a practice passed between people, rather than the designation of a single building as a World Heritage Site. The Heritage Agency highlighted the role of families and sauna societies in keeping the tradition alive.

The announcement also described work to support sauna communities and safeguard the tradition. The emphasis was on continuity: people taking part in sauna culture and passing it on.
