Build a realistic household budget using local housing, transport and everyday costs.

A useful cost-of-living estimate starts with your own household, city and housing needs. A national average cannot tell you what your monthly bills will be.

List the main expenses

Build a budget for rent, water, electricity, insurance, food, transport, telephone and internet. Ask which charges are included in the rent and which need a separate agreement. Add one-off moving costs and any rental deposit.

Compare real options

Use current rental advertisements, grocery prices and transport fares for the area you are considering. Compare the total monthly cost, including travel to work or study, rather than rent alone.

Check eligibility separately

Do not assume that moving to Finland automatically gives access to a particular benefit or service at a subsidised price. Eligibility and charges depend on the service and your circumstances.
